Diarrhea is a common disease in children. According to data from UNICEF Philippines, it is the third leading cause of child illness in the country.

But health experts warn, repeat episodes of diarrhea may actually cause stunted growth in children. This is because vital nutrients are lost every time diarrhea strikes.

Dr. Gerald Belandres, a practitioner of general occupational medicine, said that diarrhea can also cause dehydration.

Common symptoms of dehydration include dry mouth and sunken eyes. If any of these signs appear, Belandres says it's important to get medical assistance to avoid electrolyte imbalance or weakening of the body which, if not attended to immediately, may lead to death.

To protect your children from these diarrhea-causing germs, he recommends washing hands with antibacterial soap.

“Kailangan ma-eradicate o maalis talaga ‘yung mga mikrobyo na nandoon sa ating mga kamay. Gumamit din ng antibacterial soap para maalis ‘yung infection,” Belandres said.
