WHO: Contaminated food can cause more than 200 diseases
Contaminated food containing harmful bacteria can cause more than 200 diseases. This is according to research by the World Health Organization.
The kinds of diseases you can get from contaminated food can be something as common as diarrhea to different types of cancers.
“Any contaminated food or utensils [na nagkaroon ng contact sa] sponge ay maaaring maipasa ang mikrobyo [sa iba pang kagamitan sa kusina. [Ang resulta, maaaring itong maging] sanhi ng mga sakit,” Marian De leon, a microbiologist, said.
But bacteria are not only found in food. It can also be transferred to utensils by a regular kitchen sponge. This happens through a process called cross-contamination.
To reduce the microbial load of the kitchen sponge, De Leon recommends using an antibacterial dishwashing soap.
“Malaking bagay ang isang antibacterial dishwashing liquid dahil maaaring mapababa niya ang [dami ng mikrobyo at maiwasan ang] cross-contamination,” De leon said.
