Good friends and family members usually drink from the same glass. But a health expert warns, this habit may lead to disease.

“Isa rin 'yang paraan ng cross-contamination. Halimbawa, ang isang tao ay uminom o ginamit ang tumbler na 'yon na may sakit at mga microorganisms sa kanilang bibig [maaari silang mahawa]," John Philip Tionco, M.D., a public health physician, said.

This practice can lead to diseases such as the inflammation of the lining of the stomach called gastroenteritis.

“[Mas mataas ang tyansa na mahawa] lalo na’t gumamit tayo ng isang tumbler o iisang baso na hindi naman natin nilinis bago natin ipinahiram sa ibang tao, Dr. Marian De Leon, a microbiologist, said.

In order to prevent the transmission of viruses, De Leon advises using a separate drinking glass and cleaning it regularly.

"[Paalala para sa lahat], especially sa mga mommies [kasi] sila 'yug nagpre-prepare ng mga food, lahat sana ng mga gagamitin sa ating kusina [ay] dapat palaging malinis,” De Leon said.

"Mas maganda na, 'yung gamit mo ay para sa'yo lang talaga," she added.

A kitchen sponge used to clean glassware may also be contaminated by bacteria. Hence, it must also be sanitized to prevent viruses from spreading.

“Malaking bagay ang isang antibac dishwashing liquid soap kasi maaaring mapababa n’ya ‘yung incidence ng pagkakaroon ng cross-contamination,” De Leon said.
