Summer break is almost over. That’s why some people are taking advantage of the remaining days to go on a picnic. But a health expert warns warm weather can cause food to spoil easily.

“‘Yung init ng panahon, ‘yung bacteria na nando’n sa karne [both in ready-cooked food and raw meat], puwedeng tumubo at dumami,” Remedios Baclig, a technical food expert, said.

To prevent food contamination, Baclig suggests bringing food that do not easily spoil.

‘Yung adobo na ‘yan, kahit saan talagang hindi yan masisira,” she said.

Tomato-based recipes meanwhile must be avoided because it can easily spoil, especially in warm weather.

“Hindi maganda diyan yung sarsyado kasi ang base mo eh kamatis,” said Baclig.

“‘Yung mga ibang prutas wag niyo nang balatan saka niyo nalang babalatan ‘yan do’n sa mismong picnic na,” she added, explaining that fruits could also be a culprit of food-related illnesses.

It also helps to make sure that the kitchen sponge you use in cleaning food containers and utensils is clean because a sponge can cause cross-contamination.

“Ito [cross-contamination] ‘yung pagsalin o paglipat ng mga masasamang mikrobyo mula sa kontaminadong pagkain papunta sa ibang pagkain sa pamamagitan ng hindi malinis na mga kagamitan sa kusina,” Dr. Marian De Leon, a microbiologist, said.

To help eliminate the bacteria that cause foodborne illnesses, De Leon recommends using an antibacterial dishwashing liquid soap.

“Malaking bagay ‘yong paggamit ng antibacterial soap or dishwashing liquid kasi nakakatulong talaga s’ya sa pagbaba ng dami ng mikrobyo,” De leon said.
