Chicken and egg may cause deadly salmonellosis
MANILA -- Chicken and egg are among items that will always be present on a Filipino plate. However, both may be harbingers of salmonella, which causes intestine infection.
Jane Dapon's children's favorite food include chicken and egg. Hence, she often prepares dishes with chicken and egg.
"Kasi iyon 'yung mas madaling maluto. May masustansyang makukuha," Dapon said.
After eating, Dapon uses detergent bar in making sure the plates are clean to avoid diseases.
However, when the kitchen sponge used by Dapon was tested, it was found to be a thriving place for germs. "'Yung akala mong malinis, madumi pala," she said.
Microbiologist Dr. Windell Rivera explained that bacteria may easily multiply, and this can cause diseases.
For instance, raw chicken and egg, if exposed to the environment may be a thriving place for salmonella, which is a bacteria that can cause intestinal infection.
Cross-contamination may occur during this instance. "Siyempre 'yung utensil na ginamit mo for cutting, 'yung ginamit mong panlinis, puwedeng maka-contaminate sa ibang utensils. Puwedeng maging source ng cross-contamination." Rivera said.
To avoid getting salmonella or other bacteria, the kitchen area must always be clean. Rivera added, "'Yung liquid soap na meroong antibacterial agent ay makakatulong talaga para ma-reduce iyong number ng mikrobyo."
