Sore eyes can be acquired anytime, expert warns
MANILA -- Sore eyes can now be acquired anytime and anywhere, an expert said. This bucks the observation from years back when sore eyes appeared to be prevalent during the hot and humid season.
The virus causing this eye infection spreads fast. A simple touch can pass the infection from one person to another.
When a person touches someone with sore eyes and uses his hands to wipe his eyes, the virus reaches his eye and infects it.
Marie Barayong, a mother, had this experience. She said all of her family members have acquired sore eyes. Her children like playing along narrow lanes (eskinita). "'Yung buong eskinita namin may sore eyes,” Barayong said. She blamed this as the cause of her children's sore eyes.
"Dumadaing na makati daw 'yung mata nila tapos nag-start na magmuta-muta, namula," Barayong said.
If left untreated, sore eyes or conjunctivitis can cause blurred vision and blindness.
Since the disease is communicable, it could be passed on by mere touching.
To avoid this, infectious disease expert Dr. Rey Salinel reminded that it is important to properly wash one's hands.
For additional protection and to prevent the virus from spreading, an antibacterial soap will be helpful. "Mas lalo pang mapapabilis 'yung eradication ng bacteria doon," Salinel stressed.
