Water bottles, if not properly washed, may become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can cause serious illnesses, especially among children.

Take for example Edrie, a kid who got ill possibly because of a contaminated water bottle.

"Minsan nagtatae, mabilis hawaan ng sakit. 'Yung water bottle kasi niya plastic, baka hindi masyadong nahuhugasan," said Debby Anne Tagura, Edrie's mother.

According to a study, water-related diseases cause 3.4 million deaths each year. In addition, contaminated water bottles may cause illnesses such as cholera, typhoid fever, and dysentery.

"Pagtatae saka pagsusuka. Magkakaroon ng dehydration. 'Yun 'yung delikado na kapag hindi naagapan, maaaring ikamatay lalong lalo na sa mga bata," said family medicine doctor Eugene Enaje.

This is why it is important to ensure that water bottles are cleaned and disinfected to avoid contamination.

"Mas mainam pa rin gumamit tayo ng anti-bacterial dishwashing liquid upang masiguro natin na malinis ang mga kasangkapan para sa mga bata," said Dr. Benigno Glenn Ricaforte, president of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc.
