WHO: Flu among leading causes of death in PH
According to research conducted by the World Health Organization, influenza is the third leading cause of death in the Philippines.
That is why a health expert says it's important to protect oneself from flu-causing viruses, especially during the cold, rainy season when influenza peaks.
Flu spreads when a person coughs or sneezes, spreading virus-containing droplets into the air, Dr. Rey Salinel, an infectious disease expert explained.
The illness usually lasts for a week and does not typically require medical attention. But Salinel warns, if left untreated, it may lead to more severe respiratory infections such as pneumonia.
Getting enough rest, drinking water and keeping yourself warm with a bowl of soup can help you recover faster, Salinel advised.
Salinel also recommends using a vapor rub to relieve nasal congestion. Massaging it on your temple, chest and back not only improves your body’s circulation, but could also boost your immune system, Salinel said.
